Be creative!

Make your own decorations.
Wreath made from natural materials.

We're pretty self-sufficient here in Lake Country. And, surrounded by nature's bounty, we recognize the decorating possibilities presented by the pine cones and boughs just beyond our doorsteps.

If you'd like to decorate with your own unique creations this year, there are countless opportunities. One is right here on Lake Country Journal's online Calendar of Events: Visit Deep Portage Learning Center, located in the heart of Lake Country near Hackensack, Minnesota, on Dec. 12 and learn how to make your own balsam fir wreath. They ask that you bring wire snippers, gloves, and $7 for materials. Registration for the class is an additional $5 for adults or $3 for children, seniors, and Deep Portage members.

A quick browse of the Internet will turn up countless other opportunities to tempt your creative instincts by making your own holiday ornaments. If you have some favorites, please share them with our readers. Just register or sign in and add a comment.

Getting crafty!

I made my own wreath for the first time and also did an arrangement for the porch with boughs, wild red berries, a large downed birch branch, and even leftover hosta canes/branches. I used an old cream can and a watering can to hold the assortment. I added a few bulbs, a string of lights and a skinny silver strand of garland -- voila!
It's Christmas!
