Lights, Camera, Action!

Nesting ospreys take center stage.

Soon you'll be able to gather the kids around the computer and watch as nesting ospreys make their home in Lake Country. A Web cam project has brought together the Central Lakes College Natural Resources Program, Crow Wing Power, People's Security, Consolidated Telecommunications Company, and Brainerd Public Utilities—but the stars of the show will be nesting ospreys.

A nesting platform built by students in the CLC horticulture program has been installed above the Mississippi River on a "retired" utility pole. The Web cam is perched a few feet from the nest.

"Now we wait to see if we attract an osprey pair sometime soon," said William Faber, CLC natural resources instructor. He plans to use the bird-observing camera to enhance student learning, but the live streaming video will be available to all.

May is here and with it

May is here and with it arrives May Day gardening. You've seen the exact same old song and dance about growing gardens, why gardens are good for you, the reason why they are good for our economy, how they help you be self sufficient, and so on. So why not mention new things today, seed bombs! This really is a thing I just discovered, and I will have my kids out tonight to do this. Put a lot of seeds that are indigenous to your region, into a biodegradable material of some sort or other such as cheese cloth and chuck them into an empty spot. Overlooked parks, bare lots, everywhere with dirt where the seeds will not likely get dug up. You've just aided our environment by having fun, so get out there and bomb some bare lots!

ok.......

......so how do we get to see it? Do you have the url?

Lights, Camera...wait a minute...!

We will post the URL to the osprey Web cam as soon as we receive it. Apparently Central Lakes College and its partners are still working out the details. But, when we get it, we'll publish it and announce it on our Facebook page.

cool

I'm looking forward to it. It would be great if a number of readers would send in other nature live-cams. It seems like there must be a good number of them out there!
Thanks.
