It’s time once again for that age-old summer tradition—Soap Box Derby! Read more.

According to Cynthia Moe’s feature article in the May/June issue of Lake Country Journal Magazine, soap box derbies have been going on as long as kids have been fastening wheels onto boxes. The official Soap Box Derby started in 1934. Seventy-five years later, the cars still run on gravity alone.

And you can still build a derby car in your garage. The directions are right on the Brainerd Parks and Recreation website, along with the event rules and a safety checklist.

But you’d better get going! The 2008 Brainerd races are scheduled for the 4th Saturdays in June, July, August, and September—all on the parking lot at the Brainerd Civic Center.

Contact Brainerd Parks and Recreation for the rules and regulations. For more information, you can also visit the All-American Soap Box Derby website.

Then go ahead and build yourself a soap box contender. And tell us how it goes—at the workbench and on the track! Just login and add a comment to let us know.
